WaveShark

144.500 MHz and HF

SSTV

Pictures drawn line by line as they arrive, in Martin 1 and 2, Scottie 1, 2 and DX, and Robot 36 and 72, saved to disc when the transmission ends.

SSTV sends a picture as audio over a voice channel, a line at a time, over a minute or two. Watching it build is half the appeal, so the video view draws each line as it lands rather than waiting for the end, and the caption counts the lines received.

Every finished picture is written to ~/.local/share/waveshark/pictures. On a radio that transmits, a picture can be sent back out in the same modes.

Checked against colaclanth’s decoder on the same recordings.

What comes out

  • The picture itself, line by line
  • Mode, detected from the VIS header
  • Lines received, so a partial picture is labelled as one
  • The channel and the time it started
$ waveshark --tune 144.5 --mode usb --video
