Analogue video and FPV

A camera’s picture straight off the span, PAL or NTSC in colour, with its audio subcarrier heard alongside and the carrier named from its line rate.

Analogue video links are still everywhere: cheap wireless cameras, baby monitors, and every FPV quadcopter on 5.8 GHz. There is nothing to decrypt and nothing that checks itself, which is why the caption counts the lines received rather than claiming a good picture.

An FPV carrier is named from its line rate and given its channel in the usual band naming, so it reads as R1, F4 or A5 rather than as a frequency. The audio subcarrier, 6.5 MHz on the recording this was built against, is heard with the picture, because a picture with no sound is half a receiver.

What comes out

  • The picture, in colour, PAL or NTSC
  • Line rate, and the FPV channel it corresponds to
  • Lines received per frame
  • The audio subcarrier, played alongside
