Shortwave

Morse, RTTY, weather fax charts and DRM broadcasting, in the bands that reach across continents.

HF is the band where a receiver in one country hears a transmitter in another, and the modes on it are the oldest ones here: Morse still identifies beacons and repeaters, RTTY carries bulletins and contests, and weather fax sends pressure charts to shipping as slow pictures.

DRM is the digital broadcasting standard used where nothing else carries. WaveShark reads the services in a multiplex, their languages and their labels, though not yet the audio.

An RTL-SDR needs an upconverter or a direct sampling modification to reach here at all.

What lives here

  • RTTYBaudot teleprinter text from 45.45 to 200 baud, either way up, read into the message view as it arrives.
  • MorseA CW channel read as text at whatever speed it was sent, including the beacons that identify a repeater or a transmitter site.
  • HF weather faxSurface pressure charts and ice maps sent to shipping on shortwave, drawn on the video pane as they come in.
  • DRMThe services in a DRM multiplex, their languages and their labels, off a shortwave or medium wave transmission.

Every band, one receiver.

The decoders do not follow the dial: everything inside the span runs all the time.
