Walksnail Avatar

A Walksnail Avatar digital video link off the air: its channel, frame rate, frame counter, modulation, MER and antenna balance, and the goggles’ own uplink bursts.

Digital FPV has replaced analogue on a lot of quads, and a Walksnail link is a 20 MHz downlink from the aircraft with short uplink bursts from the goggles. The picture is not decoded, but the link says a great deal about itself: which channel it is on, the frame rate it is running, the modulation it has fallen back to and how clean it is.

The frame counter follows the link through fades, so missed frames are counted rather than guessed. The goggles’ bursts are read too and placed beside the downlink they answer, so the pilot’s end of the link is on the list as well as the aircraft’s.

What comes out

  • Channel and offset
  • Frame rate and frame counter, with missed frames
  • Modulation and MER
  • Antenna balance
  • Goggle uplink bursts and their offset

The link is read, not the video it carries.

Record the burst with --record and open an issue with the capture. A capture that decodes becomes a test fixture.
