Inmarsat STD-C

EGC and SafetyNET broadcasts to shipping: navigation warnings, weather, piracy reports and search and rescue calls.

STD-C is the message service every commercial vessel is required to carry. The Enhanced Group Call broadcasts on it are addressed to ocean areas rather than to ships, which is why they are readable: a navigational warning is meant to reach everybody in that sea area.

The traffic is a running commentary on what is happening at sea, and it arrives in the message view with the pagers and the mesh text rather than in a separate window.

What comes out

  • Message priority, from routine to distress
  • The service and the ocean area it was addressed to
  • The message text in full
  • Positions where the message carries them, drawn on the map
