Weather balloons on the map with serial, height and climb rate, in eight families, with the channel following the transmitter as it drifts.

Two balloons go up from most launch sites every day, climb to around 30 km and burst, and each one transmits its position and the air it is measuring the whole way. Chasing and recovering them is a hobby of its own, and the flight is public data while it is in the air.

Vaisala RS41, Graw DFM, Meteomodem M10 and M20, InterMet iMet, Meisei iMS-100, Meteo-Radiy MRZ and Lockheed Martin LMS6 are all read. A sonde drifts in frequency as it climbs and cools, so the channel follows it rather than losing it at 20 km.

SondeHub launch sites are drawn on the map with the time until the next release, so you know when to be listening. Checked against SDRangel on the same recording.

What comes out

  • Serial number, as printed on the sonde
  • Position, height and climb rate
  • Air temperature and humidity, where the sonde measures them
  • Frame number and battery, which tell you how the flight is going
