978 MHz
UAT at 978 MHz
The light aircraft that never appear on 1090, and the ground stations uplinking weather and traffic to them.
UAT is the other ADS-B link, used in the United States by aircraft below 18,000 feet. Reading it is how the general aviation traffic that is invisible on 1090 MHz gets onto the map, and the airframes on it are the interesting ones: gliders, trainers, crop dusters.
The ground stations transmit too. Their uplink carries the weather and traffic picture being sent to cockpits, which is a broadcast service with nothing encrypted about it.
What comes out
- ICAO address, callsign, position, altitude and velocity
- Emitter category, so a glider is not drawn as a jet
- Ground station uplink: the weather and traffic products it is sending
