136.7-137 MHz

VDL Mode 2

The datalink most European traffic now uses, carrying the same airline messages as ACARS at eight times the rate.

VDL Mode 2 replaced ACARS on most European fleets and much of the rest. It is D8PSK at 31,500 bits a second inside a 25 kHz channel, with AVLC frames underneath carrying ACARS messages and ATN traffic.

The link view is the right place for it: one row per aircraft and ground station pair, with the frames that passed between them opening underneath. 136.975 MHz is the common channel, but the whole allocation is read at once.

Checked against dumpvdl2 on the same recordings.

What comes out

  • Aircraft ICAO address and registration
  • Ground station address, and which side sent the frame
  • The ACARS message carried inside, with its label and text
  • Frame type, so link management is separated from traffic
